STOCKTONLAKE . COM by B. Walker 33 e U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Stockton Lake Project (Corps) owns and manages 61,113 acres of public land and water, 24,700 acres of which the lake encompasses. Of the 36,413 acres of land, Missouri Department of Conservation leases just over 16,000 acres for the purpose of wildlife management and conservation, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources leases roughly 2,000 acres for the Stockton State Park and Marina, and the Mutton Creek Marina and Orleans Trail Marina comprise approximately 500 acres. e rest of this land, approximately 18,000acres ismadeupof theparks, campgrounds, andwildlifemanagement areas that aremanaged directly by the Corps. e natural resources around Stockton Lake provides the outdoor enthusiast with ample opportunities to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether it’s through camping, hunting, hiking or sightseeing there is something to appreciate for everyone. Effectively managing the resources around the lake takes a team of several partners. e Corps’ agricultural leasing program is an essential tool used to supplement the natural resourcemission. Around Stockton Lake there are 23 different agricultural lease units available to lease for 5-year terms. Local farmers can place bids on these areas to farm the ground. Most of these lease units are for haying, but there are several areas available for crop rotations. eCorpsoffers this programtoassist with management practices as well as to provide for a need from local farmers. Much of the natural resourcemanagement around the lake is to benefit wildlife. Improving wildlife habitat through diversity in turn provides for better opportunities for hunters and all other outdoor users. Prescribed burning, depending on the time of year, promotes the growth of native warm season grasses, native wildflowers, suppresses woody plant growth, and opens woodland areas creating a more diverse habitat. Timber stand improvements and edge feathering practices have been implemented to create a more diverse habitat range when transitioning fromopen fields tomaturewoodlands. Native warm season grasses are replanted when needed in fields as thinning of the stand occurs. Food plots are also planted in select areas to assist local wildlife by providing a new food source aswell as providing improved hunting areas for the public. Control of invasive species such as Sericea lespedeza, istle, Johnson grass, Poison Hemlock and Teasel are controlled through hand applications, mechanical removal and herbicide applications. e management of these resources would not be possible without the coordinated efforts of Agriculture Lessees, the Missouri Department of Conservation, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Corps. We encourage everyone to get outdoors and enjoy the great outdoors, there are opportunities for everyone. If you or someone you know would be interested in leasing agricultural ground from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, please contact the Stockton Lake Project at (417)276-3113.
